Koninklijk Eise Eisinga Planetarium

The oldest working planetarium in the world is located on the ceiling of the living room of a beautiful canal house in Franeker. The iconic Royal Eise Eisinga Planetarium is Franeker's biggest attraction. The impressive scale model of our solar system embodies Eisinga's will to explain the universe and our place in it. Today, the model, powered by a gigantic wooden gear, still displays the current position of the sun and the planets. a fine piece of work! On September 19, 2023, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee decided to place the Royal Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker on the World Heritage List. With this inscription, UNESCO recognizes the exceptional and unique value of this heritage.
