Fort 1881

Fort 1881

To protect the coast, a number of defensive forts were constructed in the Netherlands at the end of the 19th century. For example, a fort was built in Hoek van Holland between 1881 and 1888 to guard the Nieuwe Waterweg dug ten years earlier. The De Geer II cabinet met here for the last time on 13 May 1940, before emigrating to England. During the occupation, the Germans demolished the steel domes and disposed of the guns. The domes you see now are dummies made of concrete. From 1989 it mainly served as a museum.
