The Markiezenhof is one of the most beautiful city palaces in Western Europe. It was created at the end of the Middle Ages, after a major overhaul of the medieval court of the lords of Bergen op Zoom. From 1485 to 1727, the Markiezenhof in Bergen op Zoom served as a noble residential palace. But work was also done: the Markiezenhof was the administrative center of the Markiezaat. Until 1795, when the marquisate came to an end. The French army seized the Markiezenhof and turned it into a military hospital. In 1815 the Markiezenhof became a barracks, and it remained so until 1957. Today the Markiezenhof is a museum and tourist gate. You can go there for more information about the fortress history and intangible heritage of the city, a temporary exhibition or performance.
