Bergkerk Deventer
Time seems to have stood still in the Bergkwartier. You will find numerous monuments, including the Bergkerk. The Sint-Nicolaaskerk or Bergkerk in Deventer is originally a Romanesque cross basilica and is located on an old river dune in the Bergkwartier. It was founded in the heyday of the Hanseatic city by Norbertines from the Westphalian Varlar (near Coesfeld). The church, a Romanesque cruciform basilica, was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of boatmen. The building is very similar to churches from the Baltic Sea countries. In the 15th century, the Bergkerk underwent various renovations, giving it a late Gothic character. For example, the two characteristic spiers were built in that period.
