M8 | Kasteel Doorwerth

Doorwerth Castle is a good example of a moated castle, where the thick outer walls together with the water provide protection. The castle is ideally located: well defensible on a floodplain on the Rhine and strategically on the old main road from Arnhem to Utrecht. A great place for toll collection. Doorwerth Castle was first mentioned in 1260. The predatory practices of lord Berend van Dorenweerd were a thorn in the side of the Count of Gelre and the Bishop of Utrecht. During a siege, the then wooden castle was destroyed and set on fire.
