Castle
Kasteel Doornenburg
A castle already stood here in the 9th century, probably as a defense against the Normans. In 1255 the domain was owned by the Counts of Gelderland and in 1295 a lord of Doornenburg is mentioned for the first time: Willem van Doornick, Gelders Leenman. According to stories Gijsbrecht van Amstel, complicit in the murder of the Dutch count Floris V in 1296, took refuge on the Doornenburg. However, this story has never been confirmed. As far as is known, the castle was never taken by siege. Over the centuries, different families have lived in the castle. In 1936 a textile industrialist bought the lock. The castle was then dilapidated and the textile industrialist decided to have it restored. This restoration was completed in 1941. During the Second World War, the castle served as the German headquarters and in 1945 the castle was bombed twice. All that was left was a great heap of rubble. After the war, the textile industrialist started building the castle again with its foundation. In 1966 the castle was back in its full glory. Kasteel de Doornenburg is a real family castle that is fun for young and old. Take a fascinating tour here, for example.
