Kasteel De Kinkelenburg

This castle has a beautiful location in the center of Bemmel. In the Middle Ages the castle was known as 'Hof te Bemmel'. The earliest mention of the castle dates from 1403. At that time, the castle probably still consisted of a square stone residential tower. The foundations of this tower are still under the current building. In the 18th century, De Kinkelenburg was converted into a stately mansion. During the Second World War, the municipality used the house as emergency housing for the town hall. At the time, the Kinkelenburg was the only large building in Bemmel with a watertight roof. After the war, the town hall remained located in the Kinkelenburg. The dilapidated castle had to be restored first. The current interior consists, among other things, of beautiful wall panels that come from an Amsterdam canal house. A ceiling painting by Hubert Estourgie is the showpiece of the castle. The painting depicts the four seasons and the legend of Vahalis and Rhenus. According to legend, these two giants dug the Waal and the Nederrijn respectively.
