Recreatiegebied de Lithse Ham

Rivers had special significance in the late Iron Age and Roman era. Objects were regularly thrown into rivers. This is also the case in the Maas between Lith and Kessel. During the dredging of the Lithse Ham in the 1970s and 1980s, an enormous number of archaeological objects were found. Bronze cauldrons, swords, belt hooks and clothing pins indicate that this was a special place in the late Iron Age. The human skeletal remains also indicate human sacrifice. In Roman times, a temple was built on the same site as the Iron Age cult site. Evidence has been found that the Roman general Julius Caesar was present at Empel and Lith around AD 55. Roman remains indicate a battle between the Roman army and Germanic tribes.
