During the Eighty Years' War many people moved to the Groningen peat colonies because of the flourishing trade in peat. There was a great need for a Calvinist church with a pastor. That is why city architect Coenraed Roelefs was commissioned in 1653 to build a church in Sappemeer. It became an octagonal church with a copper domed roof.
