Liberation Route
L120: Omsingeld in Uden
On September 18, 1944, an American patrol came to check in Uden. The day before there had been large-scale airborne landings. These were the first liberators, but they disappeared back to Veghel. The following day the British ground troops appeared and passed through Veghel to Arnhem. On September 22, German troops cut off the battalion. Only the vanguard of the battalion reached Uden. The other soldiers were stopped at Duifhuis, where a fierce battle broke out. The battle lasted for a day, but eventually the Germans were driven back. The route was open again, but supplies for the troops in Nijmegen had been interrupted for a day. This made it seem like the plan to land from Belgium. until Arnhem to fail. Two American comrades-in-arms became separated in the fighting. Listen to their story here.
