L119: Kasteel Hattert

Almost nothing remains of Hattert Castle. An unprecedented tank battle took place near it between the end of September and mid-October 1944. First, an American armored division takes on the Germans. The weather conditions are harsh. Rain turns the battlefield into a large pool of mud in which tanks have difficulty maneuvering. The Americans are suffering heavy losses. They are relieved by a British Armored and Infantry Division. During the battle, the castle is completely destroyed.
