The story of the liberation of Apeldoorn starts here: in the night of 16 to 17 April 1945, Albert van de Scheur and Gijs Numan sneaked over this sluice to the Canadian liberators and managed to prevent the city from falling under Canadian fire. Apeldoorn escaped a heavy artillery bombardment before the decisive attack on the Apeldoorn canal.
