In September 1944, the Allies encountered heavy German resistance during their advance to Arnhem near Elst. The area between the rivers is difficult for tanks to access. All those dikes, ditches and orchards stand in the way of rapid progress. Both the Germans and the British see ownership of the village of Elst as the key to success. A fierce battle for days is the result.
