After the start of the Allied airborne landings, a German evacuation plan immediately began. Trains were crammed with stolen goods and supplies at Nijmegen NS station. The Arnhem bridge had meanwhile been blown up, so evacuation had to take place via the Groesbeek-Kranenburg railway line. But that was already largely liberated territory! Nevertheless, the responsible German authority decided to take a chance.
