Iron was produced on a large scale in the Veluwe in the Early Middle Ages. Iron production was also the basis of the power of the Counts of Hamaland. Iron was extracted from so-called clapper stones. The forest also provided the charcoal for the ovens. The iron production was collected in and distributed through the ring ramparts. For example, the Hunnerschans controlled the iron production area and the Duno guarded the most important traffic route, the Rhine.
