Oud-Poelgeest is a seventeenth-century country estate built on the spot where a castle once stood in the Middle Ages. This castle was also called Alkemade, after the owners at the time. Between 1724 and 1738, the country estate was the summer home of Leiden professor of medicine and botanist Herman Boerhaave.
