De Essenburgh

Kasteel De Essenburgh is located in the green heart of the Veluwe between the villages of Hierden and Hulshorst. This fairytale castle from 1652 is situated in a beautiful setting between forests and vast moors. It is not clear whether this is the first structure at this location, or whether there was a castle in the Middle Ages. Archaeological research has found no traces of earlier buildings, but there are still doubts. In 1929 the castle was renovated, whereby the windows at the front were changed. The estate on which the castle is located is laid out in the style of English landscape gardens. Besides the castle there are a few other buildings on the estate. There is, for example, a monastery building that has been used by the Norbertines for decades. In 1992 a second monastery was established on the site for the female branch of the Norbertines.
