On the outskirts of Maastricht you will find Fort St. Pieter on a flank of the Sint Pietersberg. This fort was built around the year 1700 as part of the fortifications of Maastricht. The fort was built in a pentagon to protect the southern ramparts of Maastricht. At the beginning of the 17th century, the French took the Sint-Pietersberg to fire cannonballs at the southern fortress walls, and the military commander of Maastricht wanted to prevent that from now on with this fort. In the 19th century, the fort was modernized to withstand the ways of warfare that were common at the time. The fort lost its defensive function after the Maastricht fortress was closed in 1867. In 2014, a large-scale restoration of the fort was completed. Nowadays you can take fascinating guided tours of the fort. A guide takes you along the well, the embrasures and the cannon gallery, among other things.
