Fort bij Kwadijk

Visit the website
Shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, the construction of forts in front of the Defense Line of Amsterdam was stopped. The earth walls and foundations of a number of forts had already been constructed, but the construction of bombproof buildings was suspended. This was also the case with Fort bij Kwadijk, just above Purmerend and part of the North Front. Despite the construction of a fort watchman's house and engineering shed, this fort was not completed. Still, during the severe flood disaster of 1916, the empty fort site made itself very useful by supplying sandbags. Kwadijk is the first fort of the Defense Line to be formally closed down, in 1951. With this, it was several years ahead of the other parts of the Defense Line.
