Vliegtuig Crashlocatie Kerkweg
On December 4, 1943, the Halifax had taken off at 00:01 from Graveley airfield in England. A total of 19 bombers from 35 Squadron took off. This night, 527 planes flew east towards Germany to bomb the city of Leipzig. Of these, 23 did not return. The Halifax was already set on fire at 01:49 am on the way there by the night fighter of Leutnant Heinz Rolland. The plane still had all the bombs on board and was still trying to unload them. This was only partially successful. When a wing broke off, the Halifax crashed. Four of the seven crew members were killed directly in the crash. Three of them, Bonet, Cheal and Smith managed to land safely with their parachutes. During the day they were arrested at various locations and made prisoners of war. The memorial pole can be visited every day. Information board available.
