Vliegtuig Crashlocatie Molenweg
Commemorative pole for the Lancaster plane crash The aircraft, type Lancaster, had departed from Bourn airfield in England on 12 June 1943 at 23.04 hours. On the way back from a bombing raid on the German city of Bochum, the aircraft was shot down at 02:20. The Lancaster crashed on the land of P. Visser on the Slikkerdijk. Four of the seven crew members managed to leave the plane with their parachutes and land safely. Shortly afterwards, 3 crew members were arrested and after interrogation taken to a prisoner of war camp. Two crew members are still reported missing. Bromley's body was found more than two weeks later in a cornfield not far from the crash site. He is buried in the cemetery of Wieringerwaard. Commemorative pole collision Beaufighters On January 17, 1945, both Beaufighters took off from the English airfield of North Coates around 12.35 pm. The target was a convoy in front of the harbor of Den Helder. After the attack, the squadron flew back over the Noordkop with a wide bend. Six aircraft flew in the direction of the water tower in Wieringerwaard. However, the front two collided just as the tower was being passed and crashed. The four remaining believed that the two were hit by artillery from the ground. They opened fire and the water tower sustained heavy damage. The damage has been repaired, but can still be seen. The tragedy is that there was no anti-aircraft gun at all in this place. However, all four crew members of the two Beaufighters lost their lives and are buried in the Wieringerwaard cemetery. The memorial pole can be visited every day. Information agents are available.
