Hiking from Onstwedde to Vlagtwedde

Onstwedde
The village of Onstwedde has a long history; it was first mentioned in the year 875. The village is located on the Mussel-Aa and is located in a region with a characteristic farmland landscape. This area is characterized by river dunes, small forests and wooded banks and ash trees. A beautiful area to walk in.

Flagtwedde
From Onstwedde you cycle on to Vlagtwedde. This village originated on one of the sand ridges that lay in the former Boertangermoor. Flagtwedde is a cozy village in the midst of peace, space and natural beauty. The reformed church in Vlagtwedde is an elongated, plastered church. The plaster layer was applied at the end of the 19th century.

Monuments along the way
Along the way you will come across several monuments commemorating the war. In Vlagtwedde is Rolinbrug Veele and in Veele is the Monument to Belgian Paratroopers. The last monument Monument was erected in memory of three Belgian paratroopers of the Belgian SAS squadron who fell on April 12, 1945 in Veelersluis. Finally, you walk past the Monument to the Allied Soldiers Vlagtwedde. This Memorial at the church in Vlagtwedde commemorates the Allied Soldiers who died in fighting in this area.
