Cycling in East Groningen

Welcome to Grunn! This cycle route of over 52 kilometers takes you through East Groningen past the small villages of Oude Pekela, Nieuwe Pekela, Veelerveen and Wedde. Along the way you can enjoy the beautiful Groningen landscape.

The Groningen Landscape
You start the cycle route  through Wedde towards Holte. The landscape of Groningen through which you cycle is beautiful and nature is very varied. You cycle through Oude and Nieuwe Pekela, these two villages are closely linked by history.

Mills on the route
During this cycle route in the east of Groningen you will pass two windmills. The Nieman\\\'s Meul\\\'n in Bellingwedde is a flour mill that was built in 1916 by millwright Paul Wiertsema from Beerta. Further on you cycle - while you first cycled along the water for a while - along the Weddermarke in Veelerveen, a windmill that was built in 1898 by windmill makers Jan and Luitje Wiertsema. The mill came on the site of a burned down mill.

Take a rest and enjoy
Along the way you cycle through the beautiful countryside and cross one body of water after another. This is also the case in Rhederbrug, a village right next to the German border. The village owes its name to the bridge in the Rhederweg that runs from Bellingwolde to the German village of Rhede.
