Walking around on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug

Explore the area between Elst and Rhenen on foot. Walk over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and through Plantage Willem III.

Plantation Willem III
The route starts in the outskirts of Rhenen, on the Oude Veensegrindweg. Part of the walking route runs through Plantage Willem III. A foreign-looking, sloping area on the southwest flank of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. On the plantation there are a number of snow meltwater valleys from the last ice age. In addition to grassland flora and field herbs, birch, Scots pine and oak now grow in various places. In 1853 the tobacco plantation was founded. In several places there are still characteristic barns in which the tobacco leaves were dried.

Spend the night on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug
You walk along Holiday Park De Thijmse Berg on half of the walking route. You can spend the night in this holiday park in the middle of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. In the vicinity of De Thijmse Berg you will find, among other things, the Grebbelinie, the banks of the Nederrijn and the pleasant villages of Rhenen and Veenendaal. An ideal base for a family holiday.

Utrecht Hill Ridge
This route also runs through the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a high sand ridge in the flat landscape. The whole area stretches from Hilversum to Rhenen. In 2003, the Utrechtse Heuvelrug with its extensive forests, heathlands, shifting sands and lovely fens was officially given the status of National Park. The owners of the park strive together to protect and improve nature and recreation in this area.
