Explore the area between Elst and Rhenen on foot. Hike across the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and through Plantage Willem III.
Willem III Plantation: The route begins in the countryside surrounding Rhenen, on the Oude Veensegrindweg. A section of the walking route passes through Willem III Plantation, a rolling, rural-looking area on the southwestern flank of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The plantation features several snowmelt valleys from the last ice age. In addition to grassland flora and field herbs, birch, Scots pine, and oak now grow in various locations. The tobacco plantation was established in 1853. Characteristic barns where tobacco leaves were dried still stand in several places.
This route also passes through the Utrechtse Heuvelrug , a high sandy ridge in the flat landscape. The entire area stretches from Hilversum to Rhenen. In 2003, the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, with its vast forests, heathlands, drifting sands, and charming fens, was officially designated a National Park. The park's owners work together to protect and enhance nature and recreation in this area.
