Description

This NS walk takes you from Rhenen to Veenendaal through the varied nature of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. The nice thing about this route is that one moment you are standing in a dense forest and the next moment you are walking through a piece of open heath or overlooking the striking Egelmeer. It is sometimes a bit of a climb, but on top of one of the highest points of National Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug you will be rewarded with a phenomenal view. In good weather you can see up to 20 km away. Discover this tip from the municipality of Rhenen in collaboration with National Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug quickly.

From Rhenen into nature
Rhenen station is the start of this route. So you can easily take the train here and then go for a nice walk. From here you will be on the edge of National Park De Utrechtse Heuvelrug in no time. You then walk past the Cunerakerk in the center of Rhenen to the quiet nature around the city. You walk along a former tobacco plantation to the Elsterberg. From the top of the Elsterberg you can look out over the Gelderse Valley.

Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park
150,000 years ago, ice and water pushed up masses of earth and stones, forming a ridge in the middle of the Netherlands. On this Heuvelrug you are standing in the largest forest of the Randstad. Because of its location and beauty, the Utrechtse Heuvelrug has been a place where people can relax and get new energy for centuries. In October the National Park will be 15 years old. An extra nice reason to go for a walk and to (re) discover it.

On to Veenendaal
You then walk through the woods and past old heathland and shifting sand areas to Veenendaal. The terminus of this route is at Veenendaal West train station. Here you can catch the train back home, but of course you can also take a look around Veenendaal. For example, settle down somewhere for a nice meal.

The Slaperdijk
On the way you will pass the Slaperdijk. There is no water anywhere around this dike, but the dike was once built to protect Utrecht against breaches of the Gelderse Rijndijk. As long as that dike remains intact, the Slaperdijk has no function.

Tip: Follow the route in reverse and end your walk on a terrace in Rhenen on the river with a tasty snack and a drink.
