A beautiful route to view almost all the windmills in the municipality of Leudal.
You can park your car for free on the Raadhuisplein in Horn. Want to start your bike tour with a cup of coffee and a tasty sandwich? This is possible at Eetcafé Aan de Kirk opposite the square.

From here you cycle through Horn past Molen De Welvaart and Molen De Hoop, the only sixteen-sided mill in the Netherlands, to Nuhnem where you will encounter the St. Ursula Mill, popularly also called Leumolen. The Leumolen is the only oil-water mill in Limburg.

If you cycle to Neer you can view the fantastically restored Friedese Mill on the Neerbeek.

From Neer you cycle along a beautiful green route towards Roggel where you will find the St. Petrus Mill. You then cycle further along a rural route to the cozy Heythuysen where the St. Antonius Mill is located.

You continue your way via the Aurora Mill in Baexem. Did you know that Molenaar's profession was not without risks? In the 1940s, the Molenaar  of the Aurora Mill caught by a blade of the mill during repairs. He jumped from the moving blades but unfortunately did not survive the air journey.

If you cycle further to Grathem you will come across the Grathemermolen. There are indications that this mill already existed in 1252.
The last mill on this route is the Molen St. Lindert in Beegden.

The route returns via Beegden to the Raadhuisplein in Horn where you can relax at Eetcafé Aan de Kirk with a nice glass of wine or a refreshing beer. If you have worked up an appetite from cycling, you can also come here for a tasty sandwich or a good evening meal.

De Welvaart is a belt mill on the Molenweg in Horn. The stone mill was built in 1865, a short distance from the De Hoop mill. Like the De Hoop mill, De Welvaart survived the Second World War without too much serious damage. Prosperity ground until the end of the 50s of the twentieth century. In 1970, the municipality bought the mill to have it restored a few years later. - See more at: https://www.liefdevoorlimburg.nl/gebied/bezvragen/molen-de-welvaart-in-horn#sthash.tdMtTd4M.dpuf

The De Hoop windmill in Horn is the only sixteen-sided machine in Europe and was thoroughly renovated in 2009. De Hoop was built in 1817 and is one of the few mills in Limburg to survive the war without serious damage. After the death of the miller van der Voort in 1949, his widow and her daughter used the mill, something which was very unusual at the time. De Hoop ground until the end of the 50s of the twentieth century. In 1968 the municipality bought the mill, to have it restored a few years later.

The St. Petrus corn mill was built in 1901 in Roggel. The mill is named after Roggel's patron. Today, milling is still done on a voluntary basis.

Molen St. Antonius

Sint-Antonius

Less than half a kilometer by bike from the town of Heythuisen you will find windmill St. Antonius. This belt mill was built between 1860 and 1861. Originally it was a flour mill and an oil mill, but over the years the mill has mainly been used to grind flour. In 1886 a steam engine was placed to no longer depend on the wind to grind. That machine was replaced by an electric motor in 1927 and the wooden shaft of the mill was replaced by a cast iron shaft. Since 1969, the mill has been owned by the then municipality of Heythuysen, which later passed to the municipality of Leudal. In 1973 and between 2001 and 2004 the mill was restored to keep the mill running smoothly. The necessary maintenance had not been carried out for a number of years and the mill had deteriorated sharply as a result. Today the mill is regularly put into operation by a volunteer miller.

The most famous windmill type in the Netherlands. Windmills were not only used to produce flour from cereals, but also for draining polder areas. Natural energy. The most famous windmills can be found in Kinderdijk, really set up as a polder model. A must see!
