At Fort Nigtevecht you can walk around and enjoy the rich history of this place. In the countryside it is wonderful to walk through a characteristic Dutch landscape.
Gein
From Fort Nigtevecht you walk over the old Liniedijk into the polder. Along the Gein you walk through a landscape of green meadows with grazing cows, dikes lined with pollard willows and elongated plots with old farms. You can see the Oostzijds Molen, dating from 1874, one of Mondrian's beloved paintings. On the edge of Abcoude you can see the beautiful Wilhelmina Bridge over the Gein. This quail (pedestrian bridge) dates from 1908.
Fort Abcoude
Fort Abcoude dates from 1885 and is now owned by Natuurmonumenten. The fort can be visited in the summer months. Further on you pass an idyllic spot. The Hoog- en Groenland, a polder mill from 1680, is located on the river Angstel. Take a moment to enjoy the view of the mill, the rippling water and the reed beds. The last part you walk along the leafy banks of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. How quiet it is here!
