Cycle route along lakes and forts

The cycling between Amsterdam and Hilversum is wonderful. You will find forests and vast lakes. You will also pass forts and villages with a rich cultural history, such as Baambrugge and Loenersloot.

Loenersloot Castle
The first few kilometres you will cycle your legs loose along the leafy banks of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. Enjoy a breath of fresh air, while leaving the daily routine behind you. From Baambrugge you cycle along the meandering Angstel river to Loenersloot. Along this part of the route you will find one monumental building after another, varying from thatched farms and churches to the thirteenth-century Loenersloot Castle. In between you will look out over a wide Dutch polder landscape.

Fort Uitermeer
From the equally picturesque Vreeland you drive to the Gabriël: a polder mill from 1635. Fort Kijkuit is nearby. Then you drive through the Kortenhoefse Plassen, a refreshingly quiet and unspoilt nature reserve. Then you drive into the forests of the Spanderswoud. At Fort Uitermeer you can get off to enjoy the old fortress and a bite to eat. Along the Ankeveense Plassen and via Baambrugge you drive back to Fort bij Nigtevecht.
