De Ronde Venen, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 900139
Provided by: Waterlinies 2015
It is wonderful cycling between Amsterdam and Hilversum. You will find forests and vast lakes. You will also pass forts and towns with a rich cultural history, such as Baambrugge and Loenersloot.
Castle Loenersloot
The first kilometers you ride your legs along the leafy banks of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. Get a breath of fresh air, while leaving the everyday routine behind you. From Baambrugge you cycle along the meandering river Angstel to Loenersloot. Along this part of the route you will find one monumental building after another, varying from thatched farms and churches to the thirteenth-century Loenersloot Castle. In between you look out over a wide Dutch polder landscape.
Fort Uitermeer
From Vreeland, which is also picturesque, you drive to the Gabriël: a polder mill from 1635. Close to the light Fort Kijkuit. You then drive through the Kortenhoefse Plassen, a refreshingly quiet and unspoilt nature reserve. Then you drive into the woods of the Spanderswoud. At Fort Uitermeer you can get off to enjoy the old fortress and a snack. You drive back to Fort bij Nigtevecht along the Ankeveense Plassen and via Baambrugge.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
