Cycling route Vecht, Forten and Ankeveense Plassen

Water and forts are inextricably linked because the forts, together with dikes and locks, formed an ingenious system that could flood large parts so that the enemy could not get through. The system lost its function, but through this cycle route you cycle a part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam and the New Dutch Waterline and you pass a lot of water.

Fort Nigtevecht
The route starts at Fort Nigtevecht. After you have driven a bit along the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, you cycle over the bridge and cycle through the historic heart of the village of Nigtevecht. You wind along the Vecht past Fort Hinderdam, which you cannot visit, and end up at Fort Uitermeer. Here you can get off to admire the tower fort and enjoy a snack and drink on the Vecht.

Ankeveense Plassen
Via the Kreugerlaan and Melkmeent with lots of greenery on the left side, you arrive at the Hilversumse meent where you cycle with a large bend towards the Ankeveens plassen. This quiet nature reserve was created by peat extraction. In many places you can still recognize the pattern of centuries-old farmers from the narrow strips of land. The peat was dried in these fields. You imagine yourself in an oasis of peace after which you cycle through Nederhorst den Berg and descend along the Vecht to the beautiful town of Vreeland. Truly a village where you have to get off and walk around to visit it. Then take the bridge over the Vecht and cycle back along the bottom to the cycle bridge over the Amsterdam Rhine Canal to Fort Nigtevecht. Along the way you will pass beautiful houses and, if you pay attention, a number of stork nests high in the trees in the middle of the Vecht.
