Description
To the east of Westerhaar-Vriezenveensewijk you will find the beautiful Engbertsdijksvenen. Put on your walking shoes and set out through this quiet nature reserve. In the past, a lot of peat was dug here to use as peat, but later the area was returned to nature. This allowed this area to grow into a beautiful nature reserve.
A large peat area
TOP Vriezenveen is the base for this route. Park your car here and then set off through the peat area named after the Engberts farming family. The peat in this area was previously used by local residents to fuel their stoves. Peat was only excavated here on a larger scale from the 20th century onwards. The area totals approximately 1,000 hectares, but only 17 hectares of this has not been excavated. This small area still has the original thickness of 4 to 7 meters. Enjoy the tranquility of this area and see all the animals that live here, such as heather frogs and songbirds.
Admiring birds
Do you want to be able to admire all the birds in this watery area without disturbing them? Then take a seat behind the bird watching screen't Krik-eantie. This way you don't startle the birds and you can watch them quietly.
