Train walking: Wierden, Almelo and Almelo de Riet

This walk departs from Wierden train station, located on the railway line between Zwolle and Almelo. From here, a nice walk of almost 28 kilometers starts, which takes you through the beautiful Twentse bocage landscape of Overijssel. Culture enthusiasts will also get their money's worth along the way. The final destination of this route is Almelo de Riet train station.

From Wierden to Almelo
Wierden station is located on the railway line between Zwolle and Almelo, where you can easily get there with a Blauwnet sprinter and then go out and about. You leave Wierden on the south side and then walk along the Twente Canal and the Leemslagenplas. Enjoy the green nature and the silence around you. After a while you walk north again via the Twente Canal, on to Almelo. Via the south side of this city you walk north to Almelo train station.

The last kilometers of this walk you walk through Almelo, the cozy and old city of Twente. Discover the charm of Almelo. After a full day of walking you can relax at Van der Valk - Theaterhotel Almelo. You can enjoy culinary delights, but you can also spend the night there. The end point of this walk is Almelo de Riet train station.

Almelo
Almelo originated in the Middle Ages. The city's name goes back to the Germanic words alma (olm) and lauha (lo). A lo is a forest that is located on sandy soil and is often close to a settlement. Discover Twente's nature with its beautiful heaths and forests. In this beautiful landscape are old villages and towns where cyclists and hikers can enjoy the hospitality of Twente and delicious regional products.
