The Zwin and Aardenburg

You cycle along the Zwin, a unique cross-border nature reserve. At the border with Belgium, you then pass through several picturesque villages: Cadzand, Retranchement, and Aardenburg.

Boundary marker Het Zwin is the former sea arm that connected Bruges to the North Sea. Over the centuries, it has silted up. The current beach channel now forms the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. Incidentally, the associated boundary marker numbered 369 stands entirely on Dutch territory, because it kept washing away at its original location. Within Het Zwin lies an active creek system of salt marshes, mudflats, beaches, and dunes that is rare by Dutch standards. A beautiful nature reserve!

Aardenburg In the vast polders, you pass through charming Cadzand, after which you continue to two former fortified towns: Retranchement and Sluis. Earthen ramparts and moats still surround both places, offering a delightful experience. Next, you cycle to Aardenburg, the oldest town in Zeeland. Thanks to the many well-preserved old buildings, you will find a historic atmosphere here.
