The Zwin and Aardenburg

You'll cycle along the Zwin, a unique cross-border nature reserve. At the Belgian border, you'll then pass through several interesting towns: Cadzand, Retranchement, and Aardenburg.

The Zwin is the former inlet that connected Bruges to the North Sea. Over the centuries, it silted up. The current beach channel now forms the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. Incidentally, the accompanying border marker, number 369, stands entirely on Dutch territory, having repeatedly washed away in its original location. The Zwin boasts a uniquely active creek system of salt marshes, mudflats, beaches, and dunes, unlike any other in the Netherlands. A magnificent nature reserve!

Aardenburg
In the expansive polders, you'll pass through the charming town of Cadzand, after which you'll continue to two former fortified towns: Retranchement and Sluis. Both towns are still surrounded by earthen ramparts and moats, a delightful experience. Next, you'll cycle to Aardenburg, the oldest town in Zeeland. Enjoy a drink at Restaurant De Kaaipoort on a terrace before continuing to Sint Anna ter Muiden. The many well-preserved old buildings create a historic atmosphere.
