Hulst is a former fortified town in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. This route takes you along and over the earthen city walls. In the countryside you walk through the Clingse Bossen.
Ghent Gate
The first part of the route you walk through the Clingse Bossen, a wonderfully quiet nature reserve where mainly deciduous trees grow. The forest grows on a cover sand ridge, a rarity in this region of marine clay polders! Then you walk a bit along the Buitenvest. Here you can see the ramparts and the spire of the fifteenth-century Basilica of Saint Willibrord. If you walk into historic Hulst, you will see the Gentse Poort from 1720 on your right.
Eighty Years' War
You walk past the ruins of the Keldermanspoort from 1506. This special spot has only been exposed since 1960, before that the ruin was buried under the city wall for centuries. The city walls date back to the Eighty Years' War and are a well-preserved example of an old Dutch fortification system. You leave Hulst through the Double Gate from 1771. You walk through a park along the Binnenveste, you see the Stadsmolen from 1792.
