It is wonderful to walk in the woods on the Grebbeberg. The second loop of this route takes you through the flat Gelderse Valley. What a variety!
Grebbe line
At Pannekoekhuis De Grebbeberg you can eat something tasty, so that you set off with enough energy. The Grebbeberg is the abrupt end (or beginning) of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The silent forest here mainly consists of oaks. Typical forest plants such as foxglove and bracken fern grow there. At the foot of the hill you pass the Grebbesluis and the associated eighteenth-century earthen defenses of the Grebbelinie.
Castle Heimerstein
From the Grebbedijk you have a view of the Blauwe Kamer, an unspoilt nature reserve with lakes, grasslands and marsh forest. Further on you can walk along the floodplains and look out on the Rhine. From the wide polder you will see the Grebbeberg again as a green wall on the horizon after a while. You pass Heimerstein Castle, which was completely destroyed during the Battle of the Grebbeberg in 1940. The castle was rebuilt in 1946.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
