West Friesland is a unique part of the Netherlands within the Frisian Omringdijk: the only monumental dike in the world. Get on your bike and discover this cycling gem with its rich cultural history for yourself.
Spanbroek
Further on in Hoogwoud you will see the town hall from 1743, and you will also pass the Lastdrager: a polder mill from 1650. In Spanbroek you drive past the sixteenth-century village church, further on is the beautiful town hall from 1598. The Westerveer is a polder mill from 1873. In the wide polders it is wonderfully quiet to cycle on car-free roads.
Westwoud
Just above Hoorn you cycle through the village of Zwaag. Here you can take a look at the charming neo-Gothic Lourdes Chapel from 1882. Further on you will pass the Krijgsman Windmill: its two predecessors were killed by wind and lightning. In Westwoud you will see some characteristic monumental bell jar farms, in Hauwert you will pass the beautiful fifteenth-century Nicholas Church. You pass through Benningbroek and Sijbekarspel, two picturesque ribbon villages. What a beautiful region West Friesland is!
