Just outside Haaksbergen there are some beautiful nature reserves in the border area with Germany. This route takes you through the Buurserzand and the Haaksbergerveen.

Buurserzand
The route starts at the edge of the Buurserzand. This quiet nature reserve is unique in Europe due to its size and wet character. You will see a mosaic of heathlands with hundred-year-old juniper berries, forests, small fields and some orchid meadows. A little further on you drive through the Haaksbergerveen, one of the most beautiful raised bog areas in the Netherlands. Make a pit stop at Restaurant Het Muldershuis, where you will see the Mallumse Mill from 1748. What a beautiful spot!

Piepermolen
Rekken is a beautiful village on the Berkel. Here you will see, among other things, the Piepermolen, a flour mill from 1796. Then you drive through a part of Germany. Here too you cycle on car-free roads, so you can fully enjoy the natural beauty and the peace and quiet. Such as the Ammeloer Venn, a nature reserve with wet and rough grasslands where many birds live. At the border you pass the Haarmühle, a 350-year-old water mill.

Het Muldershuis is located in a unique location in the outskirts of Eibergen, an originally Saxon farm from 1753. Het Muldershuis is located next to the Mallumse Molen, which is still in operation every Saturday. At the Muldershuis you can enjoy a drink, an extensive lunch or a delicious dinner in the atmospheric restaurant or on the terrace by the water. Warm up by the fireplace in the men's room, take a seat in the authentic upstairs room or the cozy skipper's cafe. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy one of the terraces.

The Mallumsche Molen has a long history. The mill was already mentioned in 1424 as a grain and hulling mill. It is the only hulling mill in the Netherlands that runs on hydropower. This mill at the Berkel used to be in the possession of the Heer van Mallum. He obliged local residents in the 18th century to have their grain milled here. This allowed him to keep a grip on the amount of grain that was ground, the income and the tax he could levy.

The most famous windmill type in the Netherlands. Windmills were used not only to produce flour from cereals, but also to reclaim polder areas. Natural energy. The most famous windmills can be found in Kinderdijk, really set up as a polder model. A must see!
