Cycling past forts from WW1

In the Scheldeland you can take a beautiful varied cycle tour with plenty of natural beauty and old villages. You will also pass several forts that played an important role during the First World War.

Fort of Liezele
You start the route at Fort Liezele. This fort was part of the fortification ring around Antwerp and was completed just before the start of WWI. Nowadays, the green fort also functions as a museum, where you can learn a lot about the history of this fortress. You cycle through the Lippelobos, a park forest with some majestic beech avenues. Further on you will pass the geographical center of Flanders.

Schans van Puurs
You will pass through some picturesque villages, such as Opdorp with its beautiful Dries. It is wonderful to cycle along the dike along the Scheldt. Here you can enjoy the peace and quiet and the surprising amount of natural beauty. The Fort of Bornem saw little fighting during both world wars. It is now a domain for residential recreation. The Schans van Puurs is the last fortification on your route: it is now a park with a cafeteria.
