This route takes you through the border area of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and East-Flanders. That will be a day of enjoying the wide polders and creeks.
Sissy Stroel
The route starts at the Grote Markt in Zelzate. Here you can take a look at the beautiful neo-Gothic St. Laurentius Church from 1879. Also here is the statue of Mietje Stroel, the female counterpart of the famous Manneken Pis. Then you drive to Sas van Gent, this old fortified town is located on the border with Belgium. You drive through the polders on low-traffic roads. You have beautiful views under high skies. It is wonderfully quiet in this region!
mussel village
You literally drive many kilometers across the border. You will pass through Veldzicht, a hamlet that is partly in the Netherlands, partly in Belgium. Just before Sint-Laureins you drive through the Sentse Kreken, a beautiful mosaic of ancient creeks and untouched nature. In the village itself you can admire the Sint-Laurentiuskerk. Assenede is also a nice place. You will find beautiful old buildings, but also good mussel restaurants!
