You can get a breath of fresh air on the dikes along the Maas and Waal. First you drive along recreational lake De Gouden Ham to Maasbommel. Here you see old farms and the Reformed Church from 1842. Near Alphen you pass a nineteenth-century dike warehouse. Heerewaarden is a village on a narrow levee strip between Maas and Waal. You can get off here at Visitor Center De Grote Rivieren. Where the Waal and Maas once had an open connection, you now cycle over the Sluis St. Andries. You drive along a few bird-rich floodplains, you also pass the idyllic surroundings of Molen Waardenburg. A little further on is the seventeenth-century Waardenburg Castle! Then you cross the Waal and drive past fruit orchards and meadows.

6627 AC West Maas en Waal

This reformed church from 1842 is a 'water management church'. A water management church is a church built with the financial support of the national government. This funding arrangement ended the conflicts between Catholics and Protestants over who could use the existing churches.

Dijkmagazijn uit het einde van de negentiende eeuw.

Dijkmagazijn Alphen 5
6626 AA West Maas en Waal

In this dike warehouse from the end of the nineteenth century, materials were kept for repairing the dike. These kinds of 'emergency sheds' are often found along dikes in the Netherlands.

Sint-Andriessluis

Van Heemstraweg
6624 KA Maasdriel

Here you can see the Sint-Andries lock over the Sint-Andries canal. The "mild" mesh and "wild" waal come together here. In the 1930s, the Maas canalization took place, which was to ensure that the Maas was less likely to flood and became easier to navigate. During the Maas canalization, the sixteenth-century Sint-Andries canal was replaced.

Kasteel Waardenburg

This castle dates back to the 13th century and was built by order of the knight Rudolph de Cock. Over the centuries the castle has had different inhabitants. According to legend, Doctor Faust also lived here for a while and was thrown out of the castle tower window by the devil. The castle was largely destroyed in 1574. The ruin of the castle was made habitable again in 1627 and later the castle was completely restored. The square tower at the current castle actually dates from the 14th century and the moat even dates from the 13th century. Unfortunately, the castle is not open to visitors, except for special days such as Heritage Days.
