You can enjoy beautiful views along the Maas in Gelderland and Brabant. You will also pass through places with a rich cultural history, such as Batenburg.

From Restaurant De Korenmolen you drive along recreational lake De Gouden Ham. From the dike you have beautiful views over the water, on the left you see grasslands and old farms. You cross the Maas, you will also find plenty of peace and space in the Brabant polders. After Ravenstein you pass through Keent. In this rugged nature reserve, a former Maasarm, cut off and closed in 1938, has been excavated again and connected to the river on one side.

Batenburg Castle
Further on you will pass two listening points from the Liberation Route. Cross the Maas via the Regenboogbrug to Grave. You pass the eighteenth-century windmill of Batenburg. In picturesque Batenburg you seem to drive back in time. Especially if you take a look at the impressive ruins of Batenburg Castle. Just before Appeltern you pass a nineteenth-century dike warehouse. Further on are two churches in quick succession.

De molen van Batenburg

Kasteel Batenburg

Kasteel Batenburg
6634AW Wijchen

The facing stone of Batenburg Castle states that the castle was built in 327, but this has never been proven. The town of the same name is known to have originated in the twelfth century. The fact that now only a ruin remains of the castle is due to the fact that the castle was increasingly damaged over the years. During the Siege of Grave in 1586 in the Eighty Years' War, Spanish troops entrenched themselves in the already damaged castle. They were driven out by the States troops, who largely destroyed the castle. After the war, the building was somewhat renovated, until the French troops destroyed it in 1794. After this, the castle was never rebuilt. The ruins can now be visited, look for current opening times at Landschap-kastelen/locatie/?locatie=109.
