Description

Cycling over the high IJssel dikes gives a view of beautiful, open landscapes. On both sides are beautiful nature reserves and numerous lakes that remind of dike breaches. You will also pass an old and a new pumping station, a former monastery site, a power plant, two estates, mills and very old churches. Take your binoculars with you, because many birds live along the IJssel. The route is named after the former monastery Ter Windesheim.

Sights

1. Inn Molecates
Arriving in Hattem you will pass Herberg Molecaten. There is also a 17th-century upper water mill, already mentioned in 1597. Close by is Huize Molecaten, formerly a manor house with'delightful rights\\\' such as hunting rights, tithing rights and grinding rights. The current country house dates from 1826 (on top of a 15th century cellar), and can only be viewed from a distance.

2. Hoenwaard
The wide plain outside the city is the Hoenwaard, formerly common grazing land of the city farms of Hattem. You cross the Veluwse Wetering and follow the Apeldoornsch Kanaal for a while, which dates from 1828. The connection between Apeldoorn and the IJssel and the Zuiderzee was an important stimulus for industry. The canal has been closed to shipping since 1972, but industry has remained.

3. The Kromme Kolk
The Kromme Kolk at the Fratersbrug/Werverdijk in Wapenveld shows beautifully how a new piece of dike was laid around the water feature. A little earlier you can see the consequences of another dike breach on the left side of the road: the Zwarte Kolk. The small loach, a mobile, worm-like fish, has its habitat here. The animal is rare in large parts of Europe, but it is becoming more and more common in the Netherlands.

4. House Terp
To the right, the Veluwe moraine rises from the flat river landscape. The IJsseldijk you are cycling on dates from around 1370. Note the mound of the farm outside the dike near Werven and the wheels along the dike.

5. Flour Mill De Vlijt
The octagonal corn mill De Vlijt van Marle was the first oil mill in Leeuwarden in 1871. The mill was sold in 1887 and shipped in parts to Marle to be rebuilt. The mill was restored in 1997 and can be viewed when the'open\\\' sign is up, or by appointment (0578-631 414). Further on - Groteweg 54, Wapenveld - there is another octagonal flour mill with the name De Vlijt.

6. Church of Vorchten
Since 1400, possibly earlier, a ferry has been sailing over the IJssel near Wijhe. During the crossing you can see the 12th-century tower of the church of Wijhe. The beautiful church of Vorchten (approx. 1 km from route) is almost two centuries older.

7. Dike
Back to Zwolle you often drive over the dike that was built around 1308 by order of the bishop of Het Sticht (Utrecht), also ruler of Oversticht (Overijssel).

8. Tile Holes
There are beautiful brick holes close to Landgoed Windesheim. In past centuries, farmers from Herxen provided for their old age by having pieces of land excavated for clay extraction. The Veermanshof botanical garden in Wijhe offers a sample of the flora along the IJssel.
