The Horsterwold is a beautiful nature reserve on the edge of Flevoland. Ideal to discover on foot. Put on your sturdy shoes for a varied walk.
The route starts from Erkemederstrand, a beautifully situated campsite on the beach of Flevoland. From here you first walk on a car-free road between the fields. Enjoy the views before you walk into the woods on the edge of the Horsterwold. With about 3700 hectares, this nature reserve is one of the largest contiguous deciduous forests in the Netherlands. You can see chestnuts, oaks, poplars and cherry trees.
However young the Horsterwold may be, the trees look as if they have been here for hundreds of years. The clay soil here is so fertile that many trees have grown spectacularly fast and that a wealth of mushrooms and plant species can be seen. Due to its vastness, it is wonderfully peaceful to walk here. From the edge of the forest you occasionally have beautiful views over the Nuldernauw, on the other side of the water is the Gelderse Vallei.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
