In the countryside of Appeltern it is wonderful to go for a walk. You will find peace, space and unique sights.
The Tut
You walk along the Nieuwe Wetering drainage canal. Soon you will pass two historical sights. The first is the Heerlijkheid Appeltern, a country estate whose history goes back to the Middle Ages. The estate now consists of a park forest, meadows and several monumental outbuildings. A little further on you will pass the Stoomgemaal De Tuut, built in 1917: the only one of the 34 steam pumping stations in the Gelderland river area that still exists.
Gardens of Appeltern
You walk through the polder on low-traffic roads. Initially you walk along the park forest of Heerlijkheid Appeltern, but after a while you experience the characteristic vastness of the Land van Maas en Waal. You cross the Nieuwe Wetering, after which you have a beautiful view over the river from the Maasdijk. The famous Gardens of Appeltern is the last point of interest on your route. In this park you can view more than 200 different example gardens.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
