Set out on the dikes and through the floodplains along the Maas and enjoy the special landscape that you will find here. Hundreds of years ago, Maash hedges were woven here from living hawthorns and other thorn bushes. You can still see those hedges everywhere here.

Through the floodplains
The starting point of this walk is in Oeffelt, one of the oldest villages in Boxmeer. From here you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Maas and the surrounding landscape. The first part of the route takes you straight through meadows on the floodplains to the bank of the Maas. At Sint Agatha you can take a look at the Kruisheren Monastery. This monastery was founded around the year 1371 by the Crosiers. The monastery is still in use, making it the oldest inhabited monastery in the Netherlands.

Time for a break
A little further on you will find another attraction: the Exporum bull. This steel statue of a bull was part of the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels. Then you walk along the edge of the Maas for a long time. Along the way you can take a break at t Veerhuis for a snack and a drink. You eventually end your tour back in Oeffelt.

A historic landscape
The Maasheggen landscape is well preserved in this region. In many other places the Maasheggen gave way to barbed wire and the small plots turned into large-scale agricultural areas, but that was not the case here. That makes the landscape here so unique. It sometimes seems as if you go back in time as you walk through this historic landscape.

The Kruisheren Monastery or Monastery Sint Aegten is a monastery in the North Brabant town of Sint Agatha. In 1315 there was already talk of a chapel dedicated to Saint Agatha. Around 1371 a few monks came to live near that chapel to operate the chapel. This resulted in the Monastery of the Order of the Holy Cross, whose monks are also called Crosiers. The monastery is still in use, making it the oldest inhabited monastery in the Netherlands.

In 1958 Brussels was the scene of the World Exhibition. The logo of this is the Atomium, nine connected spheres that together represent an iron molecule, but enlarged 165 billion times. Another "remainder" of the Brussels Expo '58 is Exporum, a steel bull.
