Balkbrug used to be known for the steam train connections that used to pass here because it was a junction of lines. The name originated from the beam that lay under a bridge over the Dedemsvaart. This was to prevent ships with too great a draft from passing. You can enjoy cycling in the area and there are special stops to be found, such as a vineyard and the Museum Paltehof. Along the way you can take a'organic\\\' bottle of wine from the Reestlandhoeve, or take a piece of meat or seasonal vegetables from Landjuweel De Hoeven.
