Walking through the Amelisweerd and past Fort Rijnauwen

Put on your walking shoes for a nice walk through the outskirts of Utrecht. You will find plenty of natural beauty and history here.

Fort Rijnauwen
From Stayokay Utrecht - Bunnik you walk through a beautiful leafy avenue to Fort Rijnauwen. With 32 hectares, this is the largest fortress in the New Dutch Waterline. The fort was built in the late nineteenth century. Today, the fort and the surrounding area serve as a nature reserve. Badgers, martens and birds of prey live there. There is also a wide variety of plants, such as orchids. From the footpath you have a nice view of this old fort.

Amelisweerd
It is nice and quiet to walk along the banks of the Kromme Rijn. You pass through the park forest of Landgoed Amelisweerd. Further on you can cross the river with a bridge to visit country house Oud-Amelisweerd. It is now set up as a museum, including works by the artist Armando. Back at Stayokay Utrecht - Bunnik, located in the Rhijnauwen country house, you can have a drink in the café in the coach house. A historic place - again!
