The route starts at Farm Den Hof, a cozy spot in the middle of the forest. Grab a terrace here with a homemade pastry. Don't stay too long, because a nice walk awaits you. You walk through Landgoed Buitenlust, which dates back to 1850. This nature reserve derives its charm from the mix of coniferous and deciduous forest and small-scale farmland. So much variety in such a small area, that's nice walking. After a while you will pass Fort De Roovere. This redoubt was built in 1628 on a high sand ridge. Together with two other forts, this fort was part of the West Brabant Waterline that had to protect Bergen op Zoom against the Spaniards.

Fort de Roovere near Bergen op Zoom is one of the largest fortresses on the West Brabant waterline. It was completely refurbished in 2010. The fort has not always been an oasis of green nature. In 1628 the States General of Zeeland and Holland thought it was enough. The Spaniards had already plundered and conquered the fortified town of Steenbergen a few times. And now they also came dangerously close to the fortified city of Bergen op Zoom! The Dutch flooded the land through inundation and built fortresses to stop them. And so the West Brabant Waterline was created, which is now part of the Zuiderwaterlinie. Part of this was Fort de Roovere, on a high sand ridge near Halsteren. Fort de Roovere not only stopped the Spaniards, but later also the French and the Belgians. World famous at Fort de Roovere: the Mozesbrug. You walk deep through the water via the Moses Bridge, but your feet stay dry! This 'trench bridge' is a modern work of art that won important architecture and construction awards. Since 2018, a new theater tower has also been realized at Fort de Roovere, the Pompejus.
