Along the Leidse Rijn to the dunes

You cycle along the edge of Leiden to Rijnsburg. You follow the course of the Leidse Rijn or Leidse Vaart. This was dug in the seventeenth century because the old course of the Rhine between Utrecht and Harmelen increasingly silted up. Get off at Restaurant de Baron! You will pass windmill de Geregtheid, whose bakery shop is open on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Then you cycle via the Pan van Persijn to the dunes at Wassenaar. It is wonderful to navigate here through the rolling greenery, the Randstad seems very far away. You drive past Meijendel to the romantic Kasteel Oud-Wassenaar, beautifully situated in the woods of Wassenaar. It is now widely used as a wedding venue. You cycle through the greenery back to your starting point at Voorschoten.
