Discover the special history in the rural area between the Veluwe and the IJsselvallei: from a medieval bishop to a castle that fell in the Battle of Grebbeberg.
Bishop Davidsgrift
You cycle here between Veluwe and IJsselvallei - so you ride along the Bisschop Davidsgrift, the water that determines the border between Gelderland and Utrecht. The Utrecht Bishop David of Burgundy had a drainage canal dug in 1473 to open up the Ameronger and Rhenense peatlands: this Grift (or Grebbe).
Heimerstein Castle
Rhenen received city rights as early as 1258. You will experience plenty of peace and space along the Lower Rhine. From the Rijnkade you can see the more than 80 meter high tower of the Cunera Church. Further on you will pass Heimerstein Castle: after the original castle was completely destroyed during the Battle of Grebbeberg in 1940, it was rebuilt in 1946. Just before the end of the route you will see De Doesburgermolen: this closed standard flour mill was built around 1620.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
