Discover the special history of the rural area between the Veluwe and the IJssel Valley: from a medieval bishop to a castle that fell in the Battle of the Grebbeberg.
Bishop Davidsgrift
You cycle here between Veluwe and IJsselvallei - so you cycle along the Bisschop Davidsgrift, the water that defines the border between Gelderland and Utrecht. The Utrecht bishop David of Burgundy had a drainage canal dug in 1473 to open up the Ameronger and Rhenen peatlands: this Grift (or Grebbe).
Heimerstein Castle
Rhenen was granted city rights in 1258. Along the Nederrijn you will experience plenty of peace and space. From the Rijnkade you can see the 80-metre-high tower of the Cunerakerk. Further on you will pass Heimerstein Castle: after the original castle was completely destroyed during the Battle of the Grebbeberg in 1940, it was rebuilt in 1946. Just before the end of the route you will see De Doesburgermolen: this closed standard corn mill was built around 1620.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
